Looking for support in regional and remote New South Wales? There is no single route that suits everyone. This guide separates local public care from private therapy by video so you can choose a useful next step.

Start with the right NSW pathway

Your usual GP can discuss local services and whether a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral are appropriate. For advice about NSW public mental health services, the NSW Mental Health Line is a free, 24-hour statewide service on 1800 011 511. Its clinicians can assess the next step and connect people with the right NSW Health service. It is a different pathway from booking private ongoing therapy.

Find support that understands rural NSW

NSW’s regional Local Health Districts include the Far West, Western NSW, Murrumbidgee, Hunter New England and others. The Local Health District directory helps you identify the public system for your area. The Rural Adversity Mental Health Program also links people in regional, rural and remote NSW with appropriate supports; it is particularly relevant when isolation or events such as drought, fire or flood are part of the picture.

In a small community, being seen walking into a clinic may feel uncomfortable. If that is a barrier, ask what privacy looks like for a local appointment and compare it with a video session from a genuinely private space. Neither option is automatically safer or better for everyone.

When a video appointment may help

Secure video therapy can save a trip to a larger town when travel time, farm or shift work, or caring responsibilities make regular appointments hard. Check your internet connection and a backup plan if it drops out. If you cannot find a private place to talk, mention that before booking so suitability can be assessed. For an urgent or complex situation, use local health and emergency pathways rather than waiting for a routine therapy enquiry.

Could secure video therapy work for you?

The Kind Mind Collective provides individual therapy to adults across Australia by secure video. Broady Robertson is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AASW #498629). The practice has no physical clinic in New South Wales and does not provide crisis or diagnostic services. We check whether video is a safe, practical fit before ongoing work. A local GP or service may be the better route if you need in-person assessment or cannot make privacy and connection work.

For eligible people, the Australian Government’s Better Access initiative can provide a Medicare rebate for individual telehealth mental health treatment when the service is clinically appropriate and referral requirements are met. A gap payment applies here. Private sessions are another option, and suitable self-managed or plan-managed NDIS participants can enquire about therapeutic support. Ask about fees and eligibility before booking.

Our online therapy guide explains the setup, and the regional and remote therapy page explains the practice’s approach.
