This is not a debate with a clear winner. Both telehealth and in-person therapy work. Both are supported by research. The question is which one works better for you, given your situation, your preferences, and your needs.
Where telehealth has the edge
- Access. You can see a therapist anywhere in Australia. No geographical limitations, no travel time, no waiting rooms
- Comfort. You are in your own space. You control the lighting, the temperature, the sensory environment. For neurodivergent adults, this can be genuinely significant
- Energy. No commute, no parking, no navigating unfamiliar buildings. You can log in right from where you are and recover right where you are
- Flexibility. Easier to fit into a busy schedule, especially for people with caregiving responsibilities or fluctuating energy
- Privacy. Nobody sees you walking into a clinic. You can attend without anyone knowing
Where in-person has the edge
- Presence. Some people find it easier to connect when they are physically in the same room as their therapist
- Containment. A clinic space can feel like a dedicated "therapy space" that is separate from the rest of your life
- Non-verbal cues. A therapist can pick up more body language cues in person, though experienced telehealth therapists adapt well
- Boundaries. Leaving the session means physically leaving the space, which can help with transitioning back to daily life
What the research says
Research consistently shows that telehealth therapy is as effective as in-person therapy for most presentations, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and burnout. The quality of the therapeutic relationship is the strongest predictor of outcomes, and that relationship can be built just as effectively on screen.
The honest answer
There is no universally better option. The best format is the one you will actually show up to, feel safe in, and get something useful from. At The Kind Mind Collective, all sessions are telehealth by design, because for the clients this practice serves, it tends to be the format that works best.
