How to access mental health support through the NDIS

If you are an NDIS participant and you are looking for mental health support, the system can feel confusing. What is covered? What is not? What is the difference between therapy through Medicare and therapy through the NDIS? These are fair questions, and the answers are not always obvious.

What the NDIS covers for mental health

The NDIS funds supports that are related to your disability. If your disability includes psychosocial challenges, or if your neurodivergence affects your daily functioning, mental health support can be built into your plan.

This is different from seeing a therapist through Medicare. Medicare-funded therapy is about treating a mental health condition. NDIS-funded therapeutic support is about building capacity: developing skills that help you function more independently and participate in your life and community.

What it can look like

NDIS therapeutic support might include sessions focused on emotional regulation, coping strategies for stress and overwhelm, building routines and daily functioning skills, improving communication and boundary-setting, or working through burnout in a way that is connected to your plan goals.

Who can access it

You need to be an NDIS participant with relevant funding in your plan. At The Kind Mind Collective, this service is available to self-managed and plan-managed participants. Agency-managed participants would need to work with a registered provider.

If you are not sure whether your plan covers this kind of support, talk to your support coordinator or plan manager. They can help you understand what categories your funding sits in and whether therapeutic support fits.
